Lake Gatun was flooded in 1913 during the construction of the Panama Canal, inundating thousands of hectares of rain forest. Lake Gatun is a crucial component of the Panama Canal, being used for ship anchorage and access to the Atlantic locks. In 2015, a major expansion of the canal was completed, requiring removal of hundreds of hectares of forest in Gatun Lake Triton carried out detailed forest mapping and volume assessments and proposed harvesting strategies and specifications considering reservoir levels and draft of transiting ships.
